Very interesting and I really agree with the appeal he lays out. I loved imagined worlds from the sci fi and to a lesser extend fantasy real and directed that interest into worldbuilding towards real history. It's he same appeal, just with the extra layer that these things actually happened and you can still visit many of the places, see many of the structures and even read first hand accounts occasionally.

I was in New Zealand a couple of weeks ago visiting my Mother in Law. I took her to the local library so she could change her books and I went and had a look in the library's Military/War section. There I discovered Will Iredale's The Pathfinders. I got it out on her library card and finished it before I came back to Australia. A bloody good read, especially about Arthur Harris's opposition and underhanded politics/shenanigans to the formation of the Pathfinders, the development of target indicators and the nav aids. I have found a copy of Pathfinder by Air Vice Marshal D Bennett at a local museum library so that will be the next cab off the rank to read.

One of the biggest similarities between Putin and Hitler is that they have both been funded by international bankers to carry out their plans... that doesn't preclude other politicians of the world from similar funding too, it's just that the same funders control the media and would rather turn Putin into a bogeyman in the press, and forward their evil plans, than let the people of the world see the real truth...

Number of nails made in a certain time is one, dependent on the size of nail being forged and two, the experience of the smith. By the 16th century French nail smiths were forging one heat common 6 penny nails at a rate of 1500 per day.

It's abhorrent to witness the feeble attempts to whitewash the blackened legacy of King Richard III of England. To suggest that his atrocities were merely products of his time, or that they were somehow justifiable, is to engage in a dangerous game of historical revisionism. Richard III was no mere product of his era; he was a monstrous embodiment of sadism, duplicity, and cunning. Even in a dynasty known for its lack of grace, distinction, and humanity, Richard stands out as a figure of unparalleled malevolence. Comparisons to other despotic monarchs, such as bad King John, Henry VIII, or Charles I, only serve to underscore the depths of Richard's depravity. Let's not mince words here: Richard III was a usurper who seized the throne from his own flesh and blood, his young nephews, Edward V and his younger brother. He callously condemned them to the depths of the Tower of London, where their fate remains shrouded in the chilling mists of history-a history tainted by Richard's bloodlust. To add insult to injury, Richard had the audacity to legitimize his own claim to the crown by fabricating allegations of illegitimacy against his nephews. This shameless power grab, carried out under the guise of legitimacy, serves as a stark reminder of the depths to which Richard would sink to satisfy his insatiable thirst for power. Regicide, the ultimate betrayal of trust and kinship, stains Richard III's legacy to this day. The mere mention of his name conjures images of the vulgar exercise of power, fueled by the ruthless wielding of weapons and the merciless pursuit of dominance. It is high time we cast aside the rose-tinted glasses of historical relativism and confront the ugly truth of Richard III's reign. To do anything less is to dishonor the memory of his innocent victims and perpetuate the cycle of tyranny and oppression that has plagued humanity throughout the ages. Richard III was not a product of his time; he was a tyrant, plain and simple-a stain on the annals of history that can never be washed away.

So even the philosopher who was persecuted by his own non-Christian government was persecuted by the Catholic Church. I am glad to have this cleared up, I thought (from reading them) that scholastic philosophers in the west were completely indebted to Ibn Rusd and Ibn Sina, even if they disagreed with them about some important doctrines. Now I realize that the scholastics completely rejected the Arabic philosophers, so science really is just a product of European thought. All of those quotes by Aquinas of Averroes and Avicenna were just a smoke screen.

The Edwardian / post-Edwardian drama, the old series of Upstairs Downstairs from the 1970s was done accurately because (a) the mothers of the writers Jean Marsh and Eileen Atkins had been in domestic service, and (b) Angela Baddeley, who played Mrs. Bridges, could read through the scripts and eliminate all the expressions which came into british English during the 1940s with the arrival of the Americans.

Hallie is right about presenting period drama. That's why my husband and I stopped buying the Downton Abbey DVDs. It's a 2010 political agenda (feminist/anti-empire) put back into 1912-1926. Also, some of the lexis / vocabulary chosen is just too modern for that time. Examples include 'chill pill' (2000s youth slang) and 'learning curve' (1990s corporate speak). Just ridiculous.

Knew a chap whose uncle flew with Wally Rose DFC, in his Pathfinders crew, and earlier, in 460 sqn. Sadly brought down over Berlin. A question over the possible murder of several crew members who were known to have landed okay. I have added 3 aircrew to the list of murdered/lynched surrendered air crew in Germany, in the last 3 or 4 years. They can still be found and added to the record.
